If I had to look at the purpose of this particular verse, it was for Christ to become a curse for me and for you. And think about how we use that word very simply, it’s a curse. But in the Jewish frame of reference in those writings, you were alienated and out of the camp of God. This is why when people bring back legalism into the church; if you know someone who’s entrenched in that, make them read this verse and ask them, “What does this mean to you?” We’re not under the law anymore and we’re not under a curse. That’s why Jesus went to the cross; another angle of the cross. I have many different angles being developed here which all represent the different work going on, the fulfillment of the law to free me. And he’ll go on, the Apostle Paul to say that the faith and the promises may come unto the Gentiles as well.

For somebody that’s outside the camp, that’s staggering considering the Apostle to the Gentiles is speaking; pretty neat. So this concept of the cross, the law; here Gentiles will be included. Let me read the rest of that because it continues. He says, “Cursed is every one that hanged on a tree that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ.” I don’t read anywhere that the Gentiles are going to receive a blessing because they go and circumcise themselves or because they keep the law; “through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” I don’t see any works.

Now every angle of this brings a new concept. I would say if this is freedom from the law, then the last, the last part of this verse highlighted in bold letters: faith. And not just faith in faith alone, but faith in He Who went to the cross and died for me and for you that we might obtain that promise. Promise to Abraham now given to us for our faith. Simply put.

What else is there? It is because these all contain an angle of the cross, Galatians 5:11, “And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution?” This is what is so amazing. If you’re going to preach Christ, friends, budding preachers listening to me and pastors that are either present or listening around the world, guess what comes with preaching the gospel?
